Excursions in the region

João's top 6 excursion destinations

Telmo's Dad is a true explorer and shares his favorite day trip destinations for the northern Portuguese regions with you here,

Tipp Nr.1 - Porto/Gaia

There is of course a lot to see and experience in Porto:

Admire the old houses of Miragaia very close to the Ribeira riverbank, stroll through Rua Galeria de Paris and its side streets near the Torre dos Clérigos during the day or in the evening and enjoy the sunset from the famous D. Luís Bridge. Porto is also a wonderful culinary experience. Find out more here.

Tipp Nr.2 - Braga: Bom Jesus

Take the funicular or climb 600 steps up to the Bom Jesus Pilgrim Church in Braga. It is located high up on a hill and dominates the panorama of the city. There are almost 600 steps on the way up to the church, which was built at the end of the 18th century.

The Elevador do Bom Jesus Funicular Railroad is the oldest functioning water ballast railroad in the world and overcomes a gradient of 42 percent over a length of 275 meters.

Tipp Nr.3 - Guimarães

Guimarães is a town in the north of Portugal in the district of Braga. Alfonso I, the first king of Portugal, is said to have been born here, which is why it was the country's first capital and is considered the “cradle of the nation”. Guimarães was the European Capital of Culture in 2012. The old town of Guimarães is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tipp Nr.4 - Gerês

The Peneda-Gerês National Park, also known simply as Gerês, is the only national park in Portugal and is located in the Norte region in the northwest of the country. Hike, discover waterfalls and pools and refresh yourself in them. Enjoy the landscape and views.

Tipp Nr.5 - Arcos de VAldevez Soajo

Part of the Arcos de Valdevez district is part of the Peneda Gerês National Park, whose unspoiled natural landscape is home to communal villages such as Soajo, where the population still maintains its centuries-old customs and traditions.

Tipp nr.6 - 516m Lange Hängebrücke "Arouca"

The 516-metre-long 516 Arouca Bridge is one of the longest pedestrian suspension bridges in the world. It is located in the municipality of Arouca, in the district of Porto, and integrates the Arouca World Geopark of UNESCO, next to the waterfall of Aguieiras.
